Be The Worst Politician Ever: My Final Message

Have you heard?
I’m the worst politician ever.
I was called this today. I'm pretty sure the person yelling this at me meant it insulting, but I took it as a compliment. Because, of all the things I aspire to be, I would say the Worst Politician Ever is right up there.
As of November 1, 2024, Ballotpedia reports that the U.S. Congress has an approval rating of 26%. This figure is consistent with other recent polls; for instance, a HarrisX survey conducted from October 27 to 29, 2024, found a 30% approval rating for Congress.
With numbers persistently showing a low level of public satisfaction with Congress's performance, why would anyone aspire to be a “good” politician? It seems the “good” politicians are universally disliked because people think they do a terrible job.
Let me tell you what happened that made this person so upset they called me the “worst politician ever.”
I was standing by my campaign table on a sidewalk outside a local restaurant. This person thought I should go to where the larger crowd was—two blocks away at a theater hosting a film festival. (They weren’t wrong; any savvy politician would have gone to where the people were.)
What this person didn’t realize was that, on this same sidewalk, all afternoon, two women with four young children and two puppies had been asking strangers for money. Only one of the children spoke English.
These families moved between the street corner where I stood and the one across the street.
What this person also didn’t know was that my team and I had spent the afternoon monitoring these families to ensure their safety.
So, yes, call me the world’s worst politician, but I wasn’t going to walk away and abandon them to chase a bigger crowd for the sake of my campaign. And, even though this person berated me for quite some time—which, I’ll admit, left me a bit baffled—I stayed. Because if being a good politician means turning my back on people who need help, I’d rather be known as the worst politician ever than fail as a human being.
I wish the entire U.S. Congress were made up of terrible politicians like me who prioritized protecting vulnerable people on our streets over shaking hands with attendees at film festivals, even to the detriment of our campaigns. Sometimes being a bad politician means being a decent human being. And since I have to live with myself, I’d rather be the worst politician ever.
In the end, politics isn’t what changes the world.
The greatest change comes from the smallest acts of kindness.
It’s easy to get lost in the political game, where compromise becomes currency and empathy fades behind policy.
But if we are going to be bad at something, let it be something as shallow as being a politician. Instead, be great at being a good person, a compassionate person, someone who is there when needed. Because that’s what will make our country great—not politicians, but people who care enough to do what is right even when nobody is watching.
So, as my final message in this campaign, I leave you with this: don’t lose your humanity in the noise of politics. Be kind, be compassionate, and, if you must, be the worst politician ever.
It’s a title worth aspiring to.
